“If you like creepy and mysterious, this is the house for you! Every room opens a door to magic, true horror, and amazing surprises. I loved wandering around in these books. With a house of so many great, haunting stories, why would you ever want to go outside?” —R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps
Questions, anyone?
Hi, everyone! If you have any questions about the stories or me or whatever, please post them as a comment or email me (or just say "Hi"; I'd love to hear from you). I'll answer your questions in a future post.
Yeah I would REALLY like to know about the movies and also about the new John Hutchinson novel (the name escapes me right now) and how many more Dreamhouse King books? Thanks
Just returned from L.A., and I'll tell ya, Hollywood certainly operates on a different clock from the rest of the world. Very slowly, but everyone out there hustles like there's no tomorrow. It's like a big cruise ship, seeming to barely move, but in the engine room, the pistons are pumping away at blurring speeds. The "problem" is that each of my projects is with people who want to do the movie right. That means big budgets, so every step takes a lot of time. (Not that I'm complaining, mind you, since their visions for the kinds of movies they want to make are dream-worthy.)
The project I'm working on with Andrew Davis (director of The Fugitive, The Guardian, Holes) is still in the story-development phase. He and I are hammering out the story. I will write the novel and screenplay. Andy will direct. We have a producer (Mike Medavoy at Phoenix Pictures) and we're talking to several stars who are interested. Not sure of the time line, but Andy plans on making it his next film after the one he's currently doing.
The producer of Germ has asked me to write the script. I'd like to . . . if I can find the time!
Comes a Horseman is stuck in the screenplay-writing stage. It seems several scripts didn't meet the producers' expectations. I might jump in to give it a shot, but I have to find the time first. Right now, another writer has it.
Deadfall is also in the treatment stage. I'm developing on the treatment and script with a top producer (who produced, among other things, one of my favorite movies, Enemy at the Gates).
Currently, I'm working with producers to develop the Dreamhouse Kings series into a movie. Just getting going on this one.
So, everything looks good, but it's a sloooow process, especially when everyone wants it done right, which I'm happy about. I know this is a long answer to your questions, but there you have it.
The next John Hutchinson novel, called Deadlock, releases in March. It examines the idea of using video games and virtual reality to create nearly unbeatable soldiers. When Hutch starts investigating the practice, he finds out just how ruthless these soldiers can be.
The Dreamhouse Kings series will total six books. I've just finished the fourth (Timescape), and I'm just starting on number five (Whirlwind). I'm having a blast going through time with the King family!
Wow this all sounds AMAZING!!! Will there be another John Hutchinson novel after Deadlock and can you tell us the story of the new movie with Andrew Davis or is it top secret? Thanks!
Hutch is going on vacation after Deadlock, so I can explore a slightly different direction with my thrillers. I can't say anything right now, but I think the next story is going to be totally cool (with a high creepiness factor).
Much of the story I'm working on with Andy Davis is still under wraps, but it involves a Blackwater-like private army gone really, really bad. I'll post more as I can.
I suppose Bob does look a little like a Veggie Tale. Actually, I created him when I was in seventh grade, many years before Veggie Tales. Originally, his name was Don, but my brother, whose name also happen to be Don, wasn't happy about. I guess he thought I was poking fun at him. Since he was five years older and bigger than me, I changed the cartoon's name to my name, Bob. What the Kings do in the story--use Bob as a sort of family mascot, writing him on birthday cards and notes and things--is what I have always done since I was a teenage. Friends and family who've red the books immediately recognize Bob.
Hi . . . The different dates stem from people who understand the way books are distributed. The official "street date" (the date all stores should have it in stock) is January 6, but the publisher begins shipping to stores about a month before that date. Some people listing the "availability" date guess when stores will start stocking it and list that date.
In fact, Gatekeepers is available from many stores right now (Dec. 15). I don't know about "brick-and-mortar" stores, but these online retailers are selling it now:
Yes, we changed the DEADLOCK cover and the one on Amazon is the permanent one (the designers may tweak it a little, probably add an endorsement, that sort of thing). This new cover reflects the story better, in that it subtly depicts one of the plot elements: that reality is manipulated through a mask(the drop of blood against what appears to be rain). We think it's also more visually striking and intriguing. What do you think?
Thanks for the question, Bryce.

I like this one a lot better. To be honest, I didn't really get the whole hand thing and thought it looked a little weird compared to the Deadfall cover so this one in my opinion is nice

Hi Robert, I was wondering which Generation of iPod Nanos you were giving away for the Dream the Scene contest and many GB will they be able to hold? Also do you know when you might be picking the next two winners? Thank you.
Hi! The iPod Nano will be whatever model is current at the time we select each winner. The first two winners received 8GB Nano-chromatics (the bright colored ones that are currently available).
At least one of the next winners will be selected at the end of January or early February. Maybe the next two winners, depending on my writing schedule.
So when is Timescape going to come out im so excited i have read all of Dreamhouse kings the characters are just amazing. i could sit there and read the books it all day
Hi Caleb. It was nice to see you. Hope you got something good.
Bee, oh I live for comments like that! Timescape is due out in June. I feel like I'm one of the King kids: having fun with the adventure. I hope you continue to enjoy it.
I just recently heard about you from Relz Reviewz, My almost 13 year old daughter would love these books, I'm so glad I found them!

i cant wait to contiue reading your series it just captivates my mind. Any luck with the progress of developing DHK movies? i really hope that you can make the deal and start with the process. i would probably be the first in line to get the movie tickets.
The DHK movie is progressing very slowly. A lot of projects in Hollywood are on hold while the actors and producers work out their differences. I'm working with two producers right now, but it's still in that stage where anything can happen. Things should get back to normal in the next month or so, and I'll know more then. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thank you. I appreciate your encouragement. Frenzy is due out in April. It is the last book of this series. I plan on another YA series (a quick one), then another Dreamhouse series...so the Kings live on!

Hi, Mr. Liparulo. I love your books. I'm glad you have a blog, so we can ask you question and find out what's going on with you.
I have a question. Where did you get the idea of "Bob", the cartoon guy? He sort of looks like a Veggie Tale character.
Well, that's it. Keep writing!
I suppose Bob does look a little like a Veggie Tale. Actually, I created him when I was in seventh grade, many years before Veggie Tales. Thanks for asking, Jeffery.
